Custom development — Add-ons
Who can build a custom add-on when our field service software doesn't do what we need?
Pixelum builds custom add-ons for ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro, Jobber and similar platforms. We build the one piece your software is missing and connect it, so the team keeps working in the system they know.
Before building, we check three things: whether a setting already does it, whether the vendor plans to ship it, and whether an existing add-on covers it. Often one of them does.
What owners usually need that the platform does not do
- Job costing or margin reporting at the level of detail the business actually runs on.
- Commission and spiff rules that the built-in payroll features cannot express.
- A customer portal, approval step or intake form tailored to a specific type of work.
- Scheduling or dispatch rules beyond skills and zones.
- Reports that combine field service data with accounting, marketing or inventory.
Check before you build
- Settings. Ask your account rep and look again. A surprising share of "missing" features exist and are switched off.
- Roadmap. If the vendor ships it in a quarter, a custom build may not pay back.
- Marketplace. Most platforms have app marketplaces. Buying a maintained add-on beats owning custom code.
- Custom. Only for the piece none of the above covers.
We do this check with you, in writing, before quoting a build.
How we build it
- On top of the platform, through its API. Your field service software stays the system of record.
- Small and specific. One problem per add-on, so it is cheap to change or retire.
- Owned by you. The code and the data are yours.
- Measured. We agree up front what the add-on should save or earn, then check it after launch.
We call this Value Stepping: each step should pay for itself before the next begins.
When this isn't worth doing
- The gap is a process problem. If nobody follows the workflow today, software will not make them.
- The platform cannot represent your core work at all. That is a replace-or-extend decision, not an add-on.
- The cost of the gap is small. Live with it, or use a spreadsheet, until it is not.
Questions owners ask
Can you build custom features for ServiceTitan?
Yes, through ServiceTitan's API, as an add-on that reads from and writes back to ServiceTitan. We check native settings and the marketplace first.
Can Jobber or Housecall Pro be extended?
Yes, within what their APIs allow. Some needs are better met with a small connected tool alongside the platform rather than inside it.
When does a field service business outgrow off-the-shelf software?
Less often than vendors of the next size up suggest. The usual signs are a spreadsheet acting as the real system, job costing the software cannot hold, and rules the dispatch board cannot express. Several together are a reason to look at extending or replacing.
Who owns the add-on?
You do. The code, the data and the hosting account are yours.
Prove the gap. Then close it.
